The Devotion of Suspect X

A murder.
A suspect.
An inquiry.

Dimensions blend.

Two old college friends meet by chance – one whose neighbor is a suspect in a murder, and another is a stubborn Physics professor. Chapter after chapter, in this book just like pawns on a chessboard, the story evolves in this book at a fast pace. The climax of the story is a fantastic battle of wits.

“he presented me with a mathematical conundrum,” he said. “It’s a famous one, the P = NP problem. Basically, it asks whether it’s more difficult to think of the solution to a problem yourself or to ascertain if someone else’s answer to the same problem is correct.”

Yasuko Hanoaka is a single parent who runs away from her toxic husband and tries to build her life anew. However, the past catches up with her. A panic-driven mother and child murder the ex-husband Tosagu. Their neighbour Ishigami, a secondary school math educator, appears as their saviour to them and helps them to get rid of the crime. So readers of the book already know who the murderer is and the modus operandi. Thus follows the “devotion” of Ishigami to keep the alibi intact which ensues the detective Kushanagi to pursue the truth with his friend, Physicist Manabu Yukawa.

It’s more difficult to create the problem than to solve it. All the person trying to solve the problem has to do is always respect the problem’s creator.”

Twists after twists, author Keigo Higashino produces a nail-biting plot where everything here is deceptive. The driving force of unrequited one-sided love can push boundaries to the extreme and trust me when I tell you this, the twist at the end that will blow your socks off!

This book is being adapted into Netflix series – Jaane Jaan. Also, this book is said to have inspired the movie “Drishyam”.
