I Love Cakes

I love cake. Period. Cake is one of those desserts I can have even at 2 AM night. It’s the perfect bae. Here are my 5 lawful reasons why you should have cakes:

1. I will be there for you:

No amount of blues can over power the sunshine of the chocolaty molten stream from Choco lava cake. Raspberry, strawberry, blueberry muffins are those tiny pixies which hover in your mouth and just like magic, you don’t feel sad anymore!

2. Cake is always a pretext for celebrations

Cake can change even the dreariest experiences into festivities! All those sprinkles will cheer you up with colorful bliss. No matter what time it is in a year, you always have reason to celebrate and have cake! Birthday to anniversary, aboard travel to engagement party, bakers have mastered the art of creating beautiful cakes for every occasion.

3.  Cake always pleases.

Eating cake accelerates the happy hormones in your brain and warms you up with cozy feeling of happiness. The only purpose of a cake is to serve and please you. A sponge cake bathing in a bowl of custard, will definitely make you forget all your woes.

4. Cake is lovely and beautiful.

Happiness oozes out of every pore of your body as you indulge in yummy flavored cupcakes. Cakes like Black forest gateau or Red Velvet seldom leave your memories. Just like Stress – Relief shopping, you can always gorge on different kinds of flavors, proportions and designs and never get bored!

5. Any time meal option – Cake

Cake for breakfast – Muffins are anyway mixed flour and milk – so its essentially breakfast.
Cake for lunch – A Victorian coffee cake to top off the meal.
Cake with high tea – I am always fascinated with those tiny cupcakes with sprinkles served with tea.
Cake for dinner – Science says to eat sweet things for sweet dreams. So grab one tiny slice before you hop on to bed.

By Road :  Located 55 km from Junagadh City, 348 km from Ahmedabad and 156 kms from Rajkot. The Reception centre is at Sasan Gir.

By Rail : You can travel by Rail to Junagadh from Ahmedabad or Rajkot and then take a 55 km road trip on bus or taxi to Sasan Gir or can travel via local trains from Junagadh city.

All that you need to know about Gir National Forest

1)  You must book your permit early from the official site. Gir National Park is closed from 16 June to 15 October every year. The best time to visit it is between December and March.

2) There are 50 permits daily, unless specified. The permit costs around 1000 INR. Please book for the Gir Jungle Trail for the open gypsy safari. You can also go for Devaliah Safari which is travelling in covered gypsy and sighting of lion is more frequent. However the Gir Jungle Trail holds more thrill since its open and also the jungle is deeper.

3) Each permit holder is entitled for a jeep ride which can carry up to 6/8 people. It is separate charge and costs around Rs. 1700 for the open Jeep & Rs. 400 guide fees. 6) Watching lions is stroke of luck. 6 AM slot tends to fill out faster as pride of lions come out to drink water in shallow lakes at the crack of dawn. We went in 9 AM slot and we were able to see lioness feasting on a deer. There were wild boar, monkeys, peacocks and deer in the National Forest. The gypsy jeeps have different routes to follow and usually communicate to each other in case there is sightings. the total journey time will be around 2 hours covering nearly 35 KM with a 10 min break in between. Please maintain silence in jungle.

You can check out from hotel after the National Park trip and visit Somnath. Somnath temple is a visual treat, located right next to the beach. Somnath has lot of temples as it has been often visited spot for Pandavas. It is also very near to the Railway station as well the bus stand so you can stay for the evening and leave for Ahmedabad at night. Alternatively there are many guest houses, dormitories and hotels which are feasible on pocket and comfort as well.

Trip to Vetnai : Serene Life in No Network Zone

Three friends living across states and yet planning for a quick getaway can be a Herculean task. After office hours, we put in full efforts for travel planning. We chose Gopalpur-on-sea as our destination. After meticulous planning, we reached our destination without much ado. We stayed in Hotel Seaside breeze. Local sightseeing included Chilka lake boat ride, Rushikulya beach, Dhableswar beach, Gopalpur Light house, Tara Tarini Temple.

After Local sightseeing, we decided to hit an off beat destination. Lot of discussions later, we decided to go to Vetnai or Bhetanai – Home to Blackbucks ,by auto. Blackbucks are endangered antelopes (included in Schedule I of Indian Wildlife Act, 1972) . Local villagers take care of them as they roam around freely in their natural habitat.

Below is the Map to reach Bhetanai from Gopalpur

map

Since we continued the same auto services, our auto driver painstakingly got information on how to reach as its lesser-known spot. Google maps can be misguiding, so it is better to ask local residents, specially near Rotaries. Easiest way to go is to start from Balugaon. It took us more than 2 hours to reach from Gopalpur.

It’s a quaint village with immensely large fields. We left our driver to catch power nap while we wandered around aimlessly in the fields looking for blackbucks. That day I realized that I have unforgivable photography skills. As soon as I spotted one blackbuck, I started sauntering towards it. Of course, it started running much to my friends’ chagrin. Only after several admonishments, did I decide to slow down, hold my breath to capture the black beauties. . One twitch on dry twig and the blackbuck will start running, so be cautious.

Blackbuck

One thing for sure, these nearly endangered antelopes are beauty to behold with their beautiful ringed and long horns. There is a sanctuary nearby where wounded or sick Blackbucks are treated. It is off- limits to tourists. We spent some time patiently waiting for other Blackbuck sightings without any luck.

Off-beat locations can be daunting, specially for girls traveling alone. However we did not face any troubles and our auto-driver was very accommodating and always on time.

There are lot of dhabas on the way to Vetnai but do carry bottles of water. Also as a word of caution, unlike me, please have patience and maintain silence when you are looking out for Blackbucks.

Desher Bari: My Ancestral Home

Hugged by palm trees and a pond on one side, my ancestral home used to be my refuge for summer holidays. An hour’s drive from Howrah Station, my ancestral home “Santa Villa” as named after my grandmother evokes the warmth of generations. Though over years now we have moved out and built our own Home-sweet-home, this place is tied to our the chord of our heart.

Until recently, we had big pond adjacent to our home. My grandfather was a passionate man with avid interest in gardening and fishing. Lot of my summer holidays have been spent in accompanying my uncle and cousin brother in fishing – it requires lot of patience and of course, sitting still. Both of the virtues were lost on me so I was engaged in “borsi gatha” or tying the bait and collecting the caught fishes into vessel. A sumptuous meal followed those sessions. Now the pond is almost covered with hyacinth due to lack of care. Yet I love how the reflections speak of its glorious past.

I remember vividly when all ladies of the house and from neighborhood, used to come out in evening – combing each other’s hair and catching up on gossip, sharing recipes. We,the kids, got chance to be fondled by others and listening to mythological stories.

The roof to the kitchen to my ancestral home. These clay tiles have nostalgic effect – all those days, waiting for the meals to be prepared, the aroma rising from the small window on the back, the thudding sound on those clay tiles from the coconuts falling off the trees behind. The tiles bear the scars as same as the women who toiled underneath it.

Possibly all kids of our house graduated in walking years by climbing these stairs to second storey. For me, additional degree for sliding down the railings! The meticulous alpona by my Aunty to welcome Maa Lakshmi to our home – a ritual followed in every Bengali household to pray for prosperity

No matter how far we are, we all try to visit it once in a year. With fast evolving world, we are chained to the “can’t get time to visit” excuse. Living miles apart, I cherish the memories spent in our house, counting the joyous time with cousins and being spoilt by my uncles and aunties.

Stay in Swapnagandha resort

Who hasn’t looked up infinity pool? The magical reflection of limitless sky with floating clouds on pool – its on wishlist for most wanderbugs. We zeroed in on Swapnagandha resort, on our trip back from Goa. The resort is cradled in lush green Chorla Ghats. You can reach this resort hid behind high tree canopy forests by driving 60 kms from Belgaum. The drive through the rocky Western Ghats is thrilling and dangerous. There is a view point for the Anjunem backwaters as well which gives an uninterrupted view of the Western Ghats.

Once you enter Chorla Ghat, the signal is very weak and midway in the hills, it is an off-grid area. Once you reach Swapnagandha Resort, they provide wifi service which is only near the reception. On confirmation of booking https://swapnagandha.com/contact-us details, we were guided to our ridge cottage “Kelwade”. We were greeted by fascinating view from balcony overlooking two waterfalls with valley of wild trees. The greenery greeted us with wide smile.

The view with our Kokum drink
Kokum drink with a view

Right outside our balcony we had the clear view of the twin falls. Vazra Sakla falls as the name aptly suggests the falls are thunderous and wild. The falls eventually meet Valvanti River in Virdi village, Maharashtra.

The twin falls is fed by water stream from the Haltar Nullah and is one of the main attractions of the Resort.

After taking rest, we went for lunch in the dining room which is like a machaan. The traditional buffet lunch had local delicacies. We were offered refreshing kokum juice to relive exhaustion. Post lunch we decided to go for swim in the infinity pool.

The view is absolutely breath-taking.

Unfortunately, monsoon clouds follow us everywhere but it was a delightful experience. We saw clouds floating right through us, followed by shower. We took shelter in the open bar by the pool side and once the rain subsided, we went to our room.

In evening, we were served hot tea with snacks. The leaves were still dripping water from the afternoon showers. We gently sipped our tea whilst overlooking the dam. soon the sun set over the hills, dusk welcomed the silence with occasional screeching of owls. The evening activities included a mehendi session which we had skipped. As the night progressed, we were invited to watch Candle folk dance by local group of girls. The beats were intoxicating as we were engrossed in the performance which included dangerous stunts with candle stands.

We were served dinner promptly. The air was filled with aroma of food cooked in earthen pots. We jumped into filling our plates with steamed rice and Konkani style chicken and mutton. We also relished king fish, deep fried in khus-khus. The buffet had quite an impressive spread.

With happy tummy, as we retired to our room, horror awaited me. I am absolutely scared of lizards and there was one sitting right across our bathroom mirror. It wasn’t even the tame ones we normally see at home but big forest-bred, wild ones which scuttered away with speed of light(I swear I am not exaggerating!). I found two more sitting on the ceiling – so yes, I spent most part of night keeping an eye on them! In retrospection, I realized that a jungle resort will probably be infested by them – considering the jungle we were surrounded with!!

Morning heralded a fresh cup of tea and breakfast with omelettes and toasts. We took leave after thanking our hosts and set out for our journey back to Hyderabad. The resort has everything to offer a complete switch-off relaxation for travelers. So if you are looking for one, waste no time and book at Swapnagandha Resorts immediately.

Travel to Kutch

Kutch Nahi Dekha to Kuchh Nahi Dekha

Initially kicked off in 2005, Rann Utsav was a 3 day festival to promote tourism in the Kutch salt beds. With Amitabh Bachchan campaigning for the festival, it caught attention of lot of tourists. Now it is held over a 4 month period with much pomp, with celebrities lined up for show

How to Reach:
  • By Air: Bhuj city has it’s domestic airport but Ahmedabad (300 KM from Bhuj) is the nearest Airport with frequent flights from other parts of the country.
  • By Train: Bhuj has no direct trains, you can reach via Ahmedabad. An overnight journey in train from Ahmedabad is needed to reach Bhuj.
  • By Road: You can hire self driven cars from major cities in Gujarat or opt for numerous private and government Volvo buses for an overnight trip to Bhuj.
Where to Stay:

Kutch White desert has been popularized by Rann Utsav. They have tent city on the very heart of the White desert, you can check their packages here. However, over the years, now several other resorts have thrown their gates open for tourists, which provide you nearly same facilities at the same or lower cost, if booked earlier. These tent or bamboo hut resorts are situated within 5 km radius of Kalo Dungar and the White desert. You can check for suitable accommodation and package from goIbibo. We were on budget trip so we opted for hotel. We stayed in Hotel White Desert which 10 mins drive from Bhuj Station and 5 mins drive from Bhuj bus stop. It took us nearly 2 hours’ drive to the White desert but we enjoyed the road trip, stopping at various points for photos.

The Day in White Desert

You must get the permission to enter the Rann. You can get it online from Rann Permit“. Please make sure you have permit for your vehicle as well. You can get permits at Bhirandiyara checkpost but usually there will be mad rush with long queues. On the way, you can visit Kalo dungar which translates to Black hill. It is the highest point in Bhuj. A camel ride can take you to the top from where you have uninterrupted panoramic view of the Great Rann of Kutch. After a quick visit to Dattatreya Temple and snack break, we went towards the India Bridge, one of the last bridge to cross over to Pakistan border. You will need to get permission from commissioner to go beyond the bridge. While driving towards India Bridge, we encountered the magnetic field at one of the loops. Vehicles literally speed up and down the slopes for a 1 km stretch at neutral gear. Incredible though it is, our car picked up 70 kmph uphill on neutral gear.

Also check the places to visit in Bhuj

Ravine of Kala Dungar

With wide stretches of ravines and barren land on both sides of road, we finally headed towards Rann Utsav in afternoon. We had planned for full moon night to travel, so again there was long queues at the entry points. There is huge array of local handicrafts on display where you can purchase souvenirs. Prices are quite cheap compared to city rates. Kutch work jackets, blouses and blankets are among the top sellers. Most of the artists look forward to the festival for push-sale of their merchandise. Along with shopping, you can always relish the local delicacies specially the namkeens.

The White Desert

Sharp at 5 PM , we headed towards the main gate to the Rann. You can hitchhike a camel cart ride to the Viewpoint which is about 20-30 feet in height. Since most tourists thronged to the viewpoint, we decided to simply walk on the salty barren land. We were lucky to catch the amazing sunset on West and the moon rise on East. On New Moon nights, one can experience the uninterrupted vision of the starry sky. Slowly as the moon shone its full glory did the salt bed turn a pallete of silver paint, it was surreal. With cool breeze blowing and endless horizon, one cannot help but feel humble before the creation of God.

I am a firm believer in “Kutch nahi dekha to kuch nahi dekha”

Things to Remember:

  • You are required to present permit to enter the Rann. You can get it online from Rann Permit. Please make sure you have permit for your vehicle as well. You can get permits at Bhirandiyara checkpost but usually there will be mad rush with long queues.
  • For local sight seeing you can hire cars or auto, as self-driven car is not an option in the region.
  • Make all your booking related to stay and transport in advance as November to February is high season.
  • Locals are mostly dependent on tourism so you may find it costly everywhere. It will be cheap to opt for Gujarati thali.

Nonet

Sonali Dabade’s collection of 9 short stories

Nonet.

When I had heard about it first time on Bookstagram, I was intrigued with the name of the book. An apt name for 9 short narratives woven together in string – all standalone stories but the underlying “inspired from real life” current is quite palpable.

Sonali Dabade‘s third book “Nonet” is available on Amazon Kindle. The book is a quick sweet read – the one you can sit with, on a lazy evening and finish in one go.

Nonet by Sonali Dabade

Some of my favorite stories from the collection are:

Trust the future shook me the core. Though it’s set in future, the story unequivocally evokes present chaos in our society. This story reminded me that when two horses fight, grasses get trampled. In very few words, Sonali has managed to etch the fact to our mind that we should rise above our petty desires and join hands for greater good.

Dine and Dash is a weave of sweet romantic moments. I was not at all expecting the twist in the end. The story reminded me of my crazy experiences with my partner – so yes, that’s what the story does! The cute story pushes you back in memory lane to relive those moments.

Zero is a story where a surprise backfires on the protagonist. A tear jerking mild horror story, Zero taps on melancholy from losing someone.

The collection has a story for all genres. Only “A Sojourn Somewhere” lost me somewhere in between the narrative but rest all are easy reads and of course, the fluidity of language eases reader’s minds slowly into the spin. If you are looking for a quick read after emotionally draining book, Nonet may be your next pick!

Weekend in Pondicherry : A Gastronomic Journey of French Styled Town

Craving for a vacation, we decided for a quick 3 day trip to Pondicherry. The trip turned out to be more of gastronomic nature than sightseeing itself!

Some of the best places to eat out in Pondicherry.

La Villa : Pondicherry has early lunch hours – most places don’t serve lunch after 1 PM. We had lost track of time and eventually resorted to Zomato for lunch options. La villa seemed a good option and boy we were not wrong! The place has bit exorbitant prices so please go here for luxury dining and relaxation.

villa

Tanto’s : Located near Auroville. A road-side respite for journey on to the Auro beach and Serenity beach. This joint is famous for wood fried Pizzas. The outdoor seating area feels rustic, and sets the mood for simpleton lifestyle of Auroville.

tantos

Bread & chocolate : Opposite to Tanto’s, this quaint cafe is famous for its wide array of shakes and bread options, keeping health in mind! The honey glazed cinnamon bread was drool-worthy. We had tried quinoa bowl salad which was quite wholesome.

GMT : A tiny shack located right on the beach front, in front of Statue of Francis Dupleix, is a gateway to heaven – the yummy gelatos are budget friendly and blissful on hot days. We tried Buorgiano, Tiramisu, Almond, After eight – we kept visiting the place again and again!

GMT

Baker Street: One of the favorite bakery haunts in Puducherry, this place opens at 7 AM. Once you push open the door, you will be greeted with the maddening aroma of freshly baked rolls and buns. The place is always buzzing and sometimes, its difficult to get the order quickly. Nonetheless, the craze of this bakery is insanely high!

KBSN Coffee Bar : This is one of the oldest, most recommended best filter coffee I have ever tasted in Pondicherry. Located near Rock beach, people throng to this place for their best filter coffee and masala milk. So if you are on rock beach and want to recharge, please visit this place!

ksbn

Fishaurant : We went out searching for budget- friendly seafood and Fishaurant didn’t disappoint. Brilliant food, great prices and ambience. They have tiny fish bowls on tables. The entire decor is themed around seafood. We had crab balls and manga meen kozambu (on suggestion by staff) and we did not regret at all.

Cracking the Code

AK’s Journey in Bollywood

Ayushmann Khuranna. A name that catapulted to fame with his maiden film in Bollywood – Vicky Donor. After a string of flops, he rose to fame with Dum Laga k Haisha. In 2018, his dramatic performance in Andhadhun and Badhaai ho earned him world wide fame with his first National Award for Best Actor.

In 2015, he had penned his autobiography with his wife Tahira Kashyap. Picking up from Amazon Prime Read, I was led through his journey along with his vulnerabilities, rejections and of course, his core mantra to success in one of the most coveted film industries in the world. Autobiographies like such, often paint a more human side to Bollywood stars.

“Know yourself. Respect yourself. Prepare yourself. Make your weakness your strength and supplement your strength with an equal dose of humility.”

ayushmann Khuranna

The flair for entertainment and showbiz was unmistakable from his childhood, however, it came as a shock to his family and his then girlfriend, Tahira – that he wanted to pursue his career in acting in Bollywood. Bollywood is that glistening diamond every artist dreams to own and Ayushmann was no different. Defying nepotism, he slowly built his brand. At age of 17, he tried his luck in Popstars as a singer, competiting with Neeti Mohan. He later moved into Roadies, which was one of the flagship shows of MTv and eventually won the show. Ayushmann gives a front-row ticket to the behind the scenes in the reality shows and how he had molded himself through ups and downs on the reality shows. For example, it was his stint as a Roadie task to donate sperm is what eventually helped him to land with his debut role in Vicky Donor.

He had put emphasis on his slow and steady approach to Bollywood. He choose to be away from camera, post the reality show success, for a better grip on voice modulation and improvement in caricature methods. His post graduation in journalism helped him to opt for career in radio. He has vividly described the amount of preparation he used to put into his RJ class presentations. His complete abstinence to alcohol and frolic after classes helped him to invest more time in preparing for his acts. The dedication paid off and he had landed with highest bucket package with Big FM along with Gaurav Kapur. This RJ days slowly blurred into VJ days with MTv. He had to improve his fluency in English (He considers Nikhil Chinappa to be his teacher) for his shows and had also devised the famous “Ayushmann bhav” as his catchphrase. Soon he was deemed as the highest-paid host of reality shows on television.

He had to deal with several failed auditions specially for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. His first break on Vicky Donor was followed by string of flop movies like Nautanki Saala and Hawaizaade. Several of his movies failed to make a mark on box office but he did not give up on his dream. He had to juggle his successful career with his family. He married Tahira after keeping his promise of becoming established in his field of interest. He made his comeback again with Dum Laga K Haisha. He made his stronghold in Bollywood without the big banners like Dharma Productions and YRF for launch. He is one of the champions who is basking in glory without any strings in Bollywood.

His book is strewn with his words of wisdom and the “codes” to his success. He has insisted on the maintaining the unwavering attention to goal. Paiting a rather realistic picture of his journey, he has urged to turn all personal failures into life lessons. Once you are true to yourself, you can excel in your life – that’s the underlying core mantra throughout his book.

“Give your best to whatever opportunity you get; never underestimate the significance of even the smallest of junctures. Your past action will one day become your future redemption.”

AYUSHMANN KHURANNA
Unique character played by Ayushmann Khuranna in Dream Girl

He has never shied away from the characters he had played onscreen. In fact, he prepares for each role methodically which is translates into his effortless acting on the screen. The plethora of characters he has played in span of 8 years is commendable. Ranveer Singh,in an interview, had rightfully said that Ayushmann Khuranna is a genre in himself.

I had a vicarious trip of his life and Bollywood industry, walking along side with him. His wit will make you laugh, his failures will make you cry. He is the class of the actors who has transitioned Bollywood into a more meaningful avatar and the book is a just a gleaming evidence of it.

Head over to comment section and let us know if you have read the book. You can also reach me on Facebook or Instagram to share your views. Cheers to Reading!
