Born a Crime

Seamless stitching of comedy and tragedy

Trevor Noah has penned a wonderful memoir of his journey in his book “Born a Crime”.  A peculiar name to pick for book. Why you ask? He was born out of wed-lock, to his black Xhosa mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah and white Swiss father, Robert. In those days of apartheid, such a union was considered serious criminal offence and punishable by 5 years in prison.

“Where most children are proof of their parents’ love, I was the proof of their criminality.”

Trevor Noah

Trevor and his mother formed a team, rather than mother-son relationship. His recount of his early days woven with constant fear of government, struggling to have food on table to unabashedly accepting the opportunities on the way, makes the book worth every second of reading it.

“My mother calls it ‘the black tax’ Because the generations who came before you have been pillaged, rather than being free to use your skills and education to move forward, you lose everything just trying to bring everyone behind you back up from zero.”

Trevor noah

His mother has been portrayed as an epitome of courage and defiance. She juggled between her rebellious nature and her unwavering religious faith. She put in all her positivism into saving her son from “Black Tax”. Trevor Noah entertains us with recounts of her frugal measures to save money (from cooking caterpillar for dinner to getting free books for her son to read). She never missed a chance to discipline her naughty son, who also had certain thrill for “fire”. Having suffered the extremities of poverty herself, she defied every rule to get a better life and live it on her own terms. Her stubbornness eventually helped her to liberate herself from the vicious cycle of poverty.

“People love to say, “Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” What they don’t say is, “And it would be nice if you gave him a fishing rod.” That’s the part of the analogy that’s missing.”

trevor noah

Trevor monetizes his skills in every possible way. In school, he used to be champion in running. He used to take highest bid from students who placed order with him to stand first in queue for food truck. Over the years, he falls prey to snares of easy money through petty crimes. He has slept in his step-father’s garage while helping out in tasks. He has sold pirated CDs in market and later started mixing CDs. With help from his friend Sizwe, he started getting DJ gigs around his place. He never shied away from any opportunity to earn money, no matter how meager it may be.

He has covered gender roles, racism, personal relationships and domestic abuse with such honest anecdotes. He teaches how to look for silver linings in dark clouds. His steadfast candid insight makes the book a humorous read twined with life-lessons. In 2019, Trevor Noah has become the fourth highest paid comedian in the world. His journey from pitfalls of Hood to the “Light,Sound,Action” life of “The Daily Show” is truly an inspirational one!

Once Upon a Time

Singapore, 8 PM

Titli pulled her hood lower as it started drizzling. “Fine! No one will notice me cry”. She sniffed and thought aloud – “Is this why you are staying miles away from home?” Singapore, the city of dreams did not answer her question. Onsite bliss comes with the fangs of nerve-wrecking work and client – expectations. Stirring a hot bowl of soup, she struggled to fight her homesickness. All she wanted was to curl up in Sahil’ s arms. “Hope the note reaches him.” She thought as she looked out of her misty window.

Hyderabad, 5:30 PM

Sahil slumped in his chair in his ODC after all the planning and pinged his friend Kanchan over Lync. “Chai?” It’s not a word, it’s a full-fledged wake-call. Every office – goer needs this dose of elixir to bear the struggle of work. Wandering into cafeteria, Sahil reached the tea counter. Kanchan was nowhere to be seen. “Here’s your latte with extra sugar, Sahil Sir. It’s been already been paid for!” Sahil was bewildered. “Who paid for it? How do you know what I order?” Obtaining only grinning teeth in answer, Sahil took the tea and started calling Kanchan. “Pick up my call”, Sahil muttered impatiently. Dallying towards his chair, Sahil met with another surprise. A bouquet of red roses with a note on his desk. Sahil understood and smiled. “Oh Titli, what have you done?!” Sahil exclaimed. Kanchan patted Sahil on shoulder and said “Sorry bro, was being delivery boy to your girl. She is really a keeper!” Sahil blushed, thinking Titli had outdone him again. He checked his phone for Zomato order status, as he took up the note. “We have been busy for few days. Just wanted to say you are always in my thoughts, my Love! A girl should also get a chance to pamper her boy, isn’t it? Why should boys have all the fun? Sending my warmth of heart with the roses. I love you, Sahil! – Forever yours, Titli”.

Singapore, 8:30 PM

“He must have received the note by now.” Titli thought. Checking her phone, one SMS caught her attention. Sahil had credited money to her account an hour ago, the same time she got the flowers delivered to his address. “Could it be even possible?” Titli mumbled. Just when she was about to dial, Sahil called her on Skype. “Do you think only you can plan? I got your flowers. Now, forget your woes, worry about work again tomorrow but SMILE now.” He smiled mischievously. “Let’s have dinner together! I have already ordered your favourite food over Zomato and its on it way.” Sahil looked at her puzzled expression and smiled again. “Physical distance can stop us from being together but we are inseparable, right? I knew you were upset with your project deadline and you miss home. I knew something was amiss when you replied ‘k’ thrice in a row since morning! I wish I cuddle you, but for now, let’s have a SKYPE date.” Titli giggled at his silly explanation. He could read her like a book. Time zones across, there was a heart beating for her whose warmth melted away her bitterness. She held the phone close to heart and whispered the words she had read some days ago – “Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.”

Pataal Lok : An Honest Review

“ये जो दुनिया है न दुनिया, ये एक नही तीन दुनिया है
सबसे उपर स्वर्ग लोक, जिसमे देवता रहते है
बिच में धरती लोग जिसमे आदमी रहते है
और सबसे निचे पाताल लोक, जिसमे कीड़े रहते है

कभी कभी पाताल लोक के जो कीड़े है ना
वो धरती लोग के आदमियो को काट लेते है
और उनके काटने से होता है कांड”

Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate films maiden OTT venture with Amazon Prime explores the murky outlook of dishonesty and corruption in India. The show highlights the fallacies of law system and the deceptive approaches undertaken to ensure order in country.

Hathiram Chaudhary (Jaideep Ahlawat) suddenly lands with the investigation of the high-profile attempted murder of Sanjeev Mehra, a renowned journalist. Hathiram is the relatable middle-class family man who is looking for validation and recognition. It is tough being senior to an aspiring IPS officer, Ansari (Ishwak Singh) as well reporting as subordinate to once-a-junior SHO Virk. Sanjeev Mehra(Neeraj Kabi), a dim star with loosing TRP for his show, capitalizes on his apparent martyrdom to garner attention. The person who brands himself as Voice of Free Press, ironically resorts to ruthless blackmailing for lucrative cut on media deals. The gang of murderers, Tope Singh, Cheeni, Kabir M and Vishal Tyagi aka Hathoda are thrown into jail and reprimanded by Police. It is only when Hathiram sets on a cat and mouse chase for truth behind the murder motive, does he uncover dirt under the carpet and understands that truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

Image source : Amazon Prime Video

The mythological references are unmissable. The web series is a manifestation of gore-guzzling demons of Pataal-lok compared to the preach-but-not-practice celebrities of Swaarg-lok. The validation seeker mortals of Bhu-lok are always caught in cross fire between the other two loks. Each of the demons have been given particular background story where we realize how we have failed them as society and cast them away to hell for our convenience. The context stories are indeed where we are overwhelmed with guilt and are driven to question the validity of the norms in garb of rules. We identify the glitches in the otherwise, oil-welled system.

Most impressive are the dialogues which strike right at the chord. Most of the lines are satirical and mock the present day India. The show is a boiling potion of every possible herb – homosexuality, caste discrimination, default branding of terrorism with religion, mob lynching, confused teenager, gullible wife, opportunist media lobbyist and list goes on. The fast paced thriller has an extremely riveting plot twist in the end. In my honest opinion, the story arc was cut short with the sudden plot twist. In Epic finale, we realize that the accused were just innocent puppets dancing to the tunes of people sitting in Swaarg Lok. We are left with questions like why was such a huge ruckus created from outer Jamuna Paar to Chitrakoot to kill a notorious assassin. Masterji never comes out of his shadow of his shawl. Sudden murder of Kabir in jail was also left unanswered. For me, these are few underwhelming elements of the show.

Image source : Amazon Prime Video Instagram

The show has commendable performances by the protagonists Jaideep Ahlawat and Neeraj Kabi. The pivotal roles played by Abhishek Banerjee, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Swastika Mukherjee, Mairembam Ronaldo Singh, Assif Khan and Ishwak Singh makes the show worth watching.

Life in time of Corona

2020 has turned all our lives upside down. Staying at home is the new normal. So I started exploring Lockdown series possibilities, after being confined to due to COVID 19. A fun series through my phone, marking days spent inside the four walls of our house in a creative array.
This too shall pass and may we all find little joys in such dire times!

Apple a day, keeps doctor away. We need to build up our immunity to oppose the threat.

Pick up a Book for company!

Being confined to home, we have all donned the hat of Masterchef.

A plate of Chowmein!!!

Dip-dip-dip

Drops of sanitizer and just dogs, are man’s best friend now!

Puffy eyes.

Lot of sleep(thanks,WFH) can work wonders!

Keep the Fire alive!

Ludo King has brought back Family Game nights. Who’s up for a Game?

Wish I had Harry’s wand to impose social distancing!!! Spread love, from distance please!!!

With all the panic outside, I think we all need ice for our brains!

Lockdown has heralded unprecedented approach. Life feels like the boat in Jar.

Just as the boat floats in jar, we have to keep our hope floating in our confined spaces.

Stay home, stay safe!

King stands alone, leads the way!

In days of self isolation, it’s best to maintain distance.

When life gives you lemon, make a lemonade out it.
Hang in there my friends, acche din aayenge
😁

Magnets are sweet reminders of the past trips. Some trips of our friends, some of ours.

Since the lockdown started a month back, all I’ m thinking about is the day I can step out of my home fearlessly and without a care.

That,in itself, will be a treat trip!

May we all emerge stronger at the end of the self isolation period, then we will stitch together a new story!

One of my favourite art, Origami.

Vase created by my husband who was super elated by end of it. That’s the beauty of trying something new, specially when you have lot of spare time.

Unzip your imagination, Pencil your dreams away!!
Found this stack of colour pencils tucked away below papers

All hail the Queen!!!

Red for strength and valour.

Lessons from an Unicorn
1) Nothing is impossible. All dreams will come true, no matter how florid they are.
2) Believe in Yourself and the magic in your heart
3) No one needs wings to fly. Flight of imagination is all you need.

Until the lockdown, I never cared much for fresh vegetables.

Now that it’s tad bit difficult to get, I have come to respect the privileges of life.

I realized Family is all you need, even in the gloomy days. In spite of lockdown, we are blessed to be together. So for W, I choose to put up a fun photo which oozes the WARMTH OF LOVE.

How many X can you spot in the image below? 😛

Product of SUPW classes from school. Simple running stitch embroidery hand bag for simple criss cross pattern. The lockdown has brought out old habits in many, including embroidery. Clearly one of the good effects of Lockdown, isn’t it?

Whats cookin’ today?

Last few weeks, with blessing from social media, lot of my facebook friends have unzipped their never-before-seen sides with unabashed views. Though freedom of speech is a right, let’s not affect relationship based on personal views.Discussion can turn into argument even before we realise it and for a second, please re-think your words. We will not be confined to indoors forever and once we step out, shall we be able to face the people on whom we have spewed wrath on!

On positive side, Nature is recovering with improved AQI and clear water bodies. We are improving our relationships by spending more time with family and if not possible, with long distance video calls.

That’s my optimism talking though!!!
I wish at the end of lockdown days, we still continue the good habits of discipline, of helping each other in household work, of spending quality and quantity time with family. May Police and Doctors become our guardian angels.

May we all emerge together for a better world.

Lesser-known facts about Harry Potter

Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs died in reverse order of how their names were written in the Marauder’s Map.

biooks

Harry arrived at Number 4, Privet Drive in the first book with Hagrid in Sirius’s motorbike. He leaves the place in the 7th book in exactly the same way!

The “t” at the end of “Voldemort” is silent. Derived from a French “Vol de mort” meaning flight of death.

Harry, Ron and Hermione unite the three Ollivander wand cores- Unicorn hair, Phoenix feathers and Dragon heartsring.

Remember when Trelawney asked Harry if he was born in mid winter? This might be because there was a piece of Voldemort’s soul inside him at that time, and Voldemort was indeed born in mid winter.

During the Dementor attack, Dudley saw himself the way he truly was, making him realize, rather harshly, that he needed to change.

In Prisoner of Azkaban, Trelawney refuses to sit at a table with 12 other characters because she would be the 13th and the first one to get up after that would die. In Order of the Phoenix, 13 members of the order are sitting and Sirius is the first to stand. In book 7, after reaching Burrow with Harry and losing Mad Eye, everyone drinks in honour of Moody, and then Lupin and Bill leave to look for Moody’s body. Lupin was the first one to rise from the group of 13 people, and he perishes in battle of Hogwarts.

Harry Potter shares the same birthday as J.K. Rowling, which is July 31.

From the very beginning, J.K. knew she wanted the Battle of Hogwarts to lead to Harry walking to his death in the forest with his family, and having Hagrid carry him out. This is what kept Hagrid safe from dying in the books.

These were some of the original names of the characters before Rowling changed them: Hermione Puckle, Neville Puff, Draco Spinks, Lily Moon (Luna Lovegood), Madhari Patil, and Mati Patil.

The Zoya Factor

The Zoya Factor is my first venture into ‘chick-lit’ genre. Published by HarperCollins India in 2008, Anuja Chauhan’s debut novel has won various accolades in India. Anuja has shrewdly woven her advertising experience into a rom-com novel.

map

A chubby-cheek with curly mane girl, Zoya Singh Solanki is client service representative for AWB. Life throws her into roller-coaster turmoil when, while shooting an ad with Indian Cricket team, the squad suddenly realizes that Zoya was born at the very moment India had won the first Cricket World Cup in 1983. Surprisingly, having breakfast with Zoya leads to conclusive victories on the cricket field. Officially instated as the Lucky Charm for Cricket team, Zoya travels to Australia with her family for the World Cup. Unbridled gossip columns, luring offers from ad agencies and relationship with the Team’s captain messes up her mind. The Karol Bagh girl tries her best to balance her personal commitments and nation’s expectations as ‘Cricket Goddess’.

Half-way through the book and I realize the book is crammed with “Bollywood masala”. To be directed by Abhishek Sharma, starring Sonam Kapoor and Dulquer Salmaan – The Zoya Factor is a perfect blend of India’s favourite topics cricket and politics, catalyzed by love and superstition. The English and ‘Hinglish’ caricature sets the tone of the book and drapes it in Desi avatar. Zoya’s love-hate relationship with Nikhil Khoda will surely lure the audience.

For book-nerds, if you love rom-com and chick-lit genre, please add this book to your shelf! Head over to comment section and let us know if you have read the book. Reach me on Facebook or Instagram to share your views. Cheers to Reading!

In this book, author Shashi Tharoor reveals with unsullied research, how British rule in India was catastrophic. The meticulous mistreatment of Indians, the demolition of the Indian textile and steel-making industries and the negative transformation of agriculture are among few of the collateral damage done during the British raj. He ravages the Western arguments, with his trademark humor, on the apparent ‘benefits’ of British rule. Even English language, tea or cricket which are hailed as the English boons, were never actually intended for the advantage of the Indians but were introduced to serve the interests of the colonists. Exceptionally debated, An Era of Darkness corrects several eccentricities about one of the most disputed periods of Indian history.

Man’s Search for Meaning

Man’s Search for Meaning was first published in 1946. Victor Frankl was a holocaust survivor. He chronicled his experiences to write this book. He advocated the theory that it is Man’s continuous search for Meaning that allows him to survive even the most degrading and horrible situations in his life. Frankl’s views were dissimilar to those of the leading psychologist of his times, Freud and Adler. His research was personal and based on his Holocaust anguishes. He pinpointed that people who were optimistic and could focus on love and hope were able to survive than the ones who gave in to the woes and harsh sufferings. The book has been listed as one of the 10 most influential books.
